Unit objective: Use root cause analysis to determine the cause of a problem and
them develop a solution for it by determine what must be obtained,
preserved, avoided and eliminated in order to solve the problem.
Study Zone: Staying in the study zone requires focusing using analytical reason
when obtaining, retaining, and using the information required to
develop root cause analysis map and then determine what must be
obtained, preserved, avoided and eliminated in order to solve the
problem.
Every day there are always many minor problems or activities that require one or more of four actions in order to solve it. For example, something commonly done such as driving to work or sending an e-mail requires obtaining, preserving, avoiding and eliminating something. This is usually done automatically when all of the information required to make a decision is known. When all of the information required to make a decision is not known, it is necessary to do a root cause analysis of the problem to determine what information is needed.
When needing to solve a major problem it requires critical thinking skills in order to determine the root cause of the problem. The root cause of a problem usually produces effects that sometimes are identified as the root cause of problem. However, these effects are just symptoms of the problem and not the initial cause. Solving a problem requires finding the initiating or root cause and determining the actions needed to solve it. In order to solve a problem a Problem Solving Map is created showing what actions need to be obtained, preserved, avoided and eliminated in order to solve a problem.
Teaching Suggestions:
Explain the solution of any problem requires one or more of four actions: obtain, preserve, avoid, and eliminate. When looking for a solution to any problem, it is always necessary to always think which of the four actions are required to solve it.
Practice Exercise: There is no practice exercise for this unit. (see Assignment 7 )
Discussion Questions:
- When driving to the college today what was required to obtain, preserve, avoid
and eliminate in order to arrive in class on time?
- How will you use problem solving techniques to reduce or prevent test anxiety and
become a successful college student?
- For a national problem that is in the news discuss what needs to be obtained,
preserved, avoided and eliminated in order to solve the problem.
- What must you obtain, preserve, avoid and eliminate in order to use problem
solving techniques to succeed in your personal and educational goals?
Assignment 7:
- Assignment 1: Use a Root Cause Analysis Map to solve a problem
- Assignment 2: Use a Project Prevention Planning Chart to prevent a problem
