Unit 7: Predicting Definition and Example Test Questions

 

   
 

Unit Objective:   Known how to predict definition and example test questions for the terms introduced in a college course.

Study Zone:   Staying in the study zone requires focusing on predicting test questions when obtaining and reviewing the definition of a term.

Both college tests and professional licensing examinations have questions that measure the ability to recognize one of the three parts of a term's definition and examples of it.  By applying the strategies developed in this unit, it is possible to predict definition and example test questions for the terms introduced in a college course and found on professional licensing examinations.

Teaching Suggestions:
Ask instructors to give you copies of previous tests that have example and definition test questions.   On the Internet can be found tests on many different subjects that contain definition and example questions.  Use these tests to locate questions that measure knowledge of a term's definition and being able to recognize examples of a term.

Practice Exercises:  Predict what information is required to answer a test question

  • Exercise 7.1:  Determine What Part of a Definition is Required to Answer a Test Question
  • Exercise 7.2:  Determining What Information is Required to Answer an Example Question

Discussion Questions:

  1. What courses and subjects do you expect to find definition and example test questions?
  2. If an instructor does not have definition and example questions on his or her tests should you stop learning the definitions of the terms introduced in the course and recognizing examples of them?
  3. For the terms defined in Unit 1 develop definition and example test questions.
  4. How does learning the definitions and recognizing the examples of them reduce or prevent test anxiety?
  5. What must be obtained, preserved, avoided, and eliminated in order to retain the definition of the terms used in a college course

Assignments:  

  1. Develop recognition and recall test questions that measure knowledge of the three parts of a term's definition and examples of it.
  2. For any test identify the questions that measure knowledge of a definition or example.  

Preparation for Section 3:  Comprehension Skills
Inform the students that having completed the Vocabulary Skills Section they are now ready to continue to the Comprehension Skills Section of the program.  Understanding the definition of the terms used is the prerequisite required for understanding the information in all college courses The purpose of the Comprehension Skills Section is to learn how to understand the information being obtained, retained and used in a college course.
